We don’t need Mat Dillon (Gunsmoke) or Harry Callahan (Dirty Harry) or even Batman to point out that this here town needs a good cleanup.
Let’s start by getting rid of the immigrants. You know, the ones who weren’t born here? Especially immigrants from what the President calls ‘shithole countries.’ It’s only logical. First come, first served, right?
If your antecedents stepped off the Mayflower and you don’t have any African blood in your veins (the ‘One Drop’ law), then relax. You can stay. And you can ignore the rest of this post because it isn’t going to align with the largely imagined universe in which you live.
In the immortal Tweeting of US President Donald Trump, July 14, 2019:
“So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run…Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done.”
I’ve always had a mind like a steel trap. Sometimes for me that’s good and sometimes not so good. For others, that is. This time, I seem to recall the President mentioning that his own father was born in Germany. As the President himself loves to repeat, “Some people didn’t know that.” Well, now you know that too (NOT).
While it’s true that one of the Congresswomen targeted by the President’s July 14 diatribe, Ilhan Omar, was born in Somalia, the rest are all Made-in-USA. No doubt POTUS45, backed up by FLOTUS45 (see www.francescorizzuto.com/blog/first-lady-of-porn) will soon demand that they each produce an American birth certificate. And it better not be a ‘Certificate of Live Birth,’ either; because, according to Slovakian-born Melania, that’s not a real birth certificate.
Curiously, for a man who boasts that he “grabs-em-by-the-pussy,” and who, by observation, innuendo, and a fair amount of actual testimony prefers sexual relations with underage girls, Donald Trump doesn’t favour American women when it comes to actual marriage. Two of his three legal wives have been foreign-born. Even his favourite daughter, whom he admits he’d like to date, is named Ivanka, hardly an American handle. I could go on, but WTF.
In a next-day Tweet, America’s Bully-in-Chief addressed the widespread indignation at his previous day’s racist jab by demanding that the supposedly foreign-born Congresswomen apologize to the American people.
The British, who no doubt are congratulating themselves for having cut these troublesome former colonists loose to mire in their own racism, bigotry and greed, have expressed the opinion that the ship of civility in American politics has long since sailed. I would argue that the ship has finally sunk. Decades of low-quality education and widespread poverty both inside and outside the country's major cities, coupled with a legacy of White-supremacy that’s firmly embedded in the American psyche, has finally gotten the country the government it deserves.
What’s so unnerving about the President’s most recent racist pronouncements, preceded by a long history of similar statements and Tweets, is the fact that he refers (erroneously) to the targeted Congresswomen’s former homes as “Countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all…[the] broken and crime infested places from which they came…”
Like I said at the beginning of this rant, Mat Dillon, Dirty Harry and Batman have their work cut out for them. Just take a look around. The USA has more persons incarcerated per capita in its unique prisons-for-profit network than any other country, while the quality of American education is among the poorest in the world. ‘Malicious ignorance’ ensures that roughly 50% of the American electorate chose and continues to support a President whose grip on reality is tenuous at the best of times, a narcissistic sociopath and pathological liar with his finger on the nuclear trigger. But you don’t need to keep up with the political side to recognize that the American system is “broken and crime infested,” or that much of the country is “impoverished.”
All of the country’s major cities have crime infested pockets of extreme poverty where even the police fear to operate. And the rural environment can be worse.
As a child in the 1940’s and 50’s, I often accompanied my father on the Illinois Central Railroad whose mainline runs from Chicago to New Orleans. What I learned from these junkets aboard the Panama Limited and City of New Orleans contradicted what we were taught in school, that America was a land of plenty where everyone enjoyed an equal share of freedom and prosperity. Instead, what I saw from the train window and the whistle stop towns that we visited was a landscape of poverty and despair where people, both Blacks and Whites, lived in dilapidated trailers and tar paper shacks, where sore-covered children grubbed in the dirt, and decaying hamlets that resembled junkyards at best, war zones at worst. Sure, there were a few so-called ‘Mayberrys’ here and there, the largely mythical America depicted in the beloved Andy Griffith TV series of that era, but these were places inhabited almost exclusively by Whites whose economy depended primarily on the exploitation of non-White tenant farmers or else were somehow associated with military installations or manufacturing plants owned by Whites. The cities were no different. White folks lived in the nice districts, Blacks and Latinos inhabited the slums. There was no cross-over.
The civil rights movement of the 1960’s put a bold new face on things but the basic racist and anti-progressive attitudes that firmly achored the country in poverty and crime (the one is a corollary of the other) didn’t change.
Let’s ignore the situation in the major cities, many of which are currently in a state of transition and take a trip from across the Canadian border into Washington and Idaho, or from Mexico into Texas and across the Southern States. What the visitor still encounters is that same unvarnished poverty, largely demarcated along racial lines.
I’m currently working on a construction project sited in one of the most troubled and impoverished nations of Africa, what the President loves to call a “shithole country.” It’s a ‘Level 5’ conflict zone plagued by malaria, ebola, and the depredations of local warlords, not to mention the bite of the deadly Black Mamba snake (death within 30 minutes). Yet, one’s chances for becoming a victim of gun violence there are much lower than in USA.
I feel safer on the job site than in any major American city and the endemic poverty surrounding it is largely familiar. There’s nothing worse here than what I observed as a child from the windows of a passenger train speeding through rural Alabama.
Some years ago, I followed Josephine Baker’s example and left the USA for good. In the European Union, I no longer worry about whether my children will come home from school in a bus or a box. I don’t need to confront racist policemen and bureaucrats to get through my day. I enjoy universal free health care. I don’t mind paying taxes, given the peace, prosperity and benefits that all residents here enjoy. University access is free and based on merit, not money and privilege. The term 'student debt' is unknown. Most strikingly, immigrants are welcomed. And I have far more freedoms than I enjoyed as a child in the ‘Land of the Free.”
Sadly, time and progress in the world have bypassed America. The very idea that a sociopathic dictator with criminal tendencies can Make America Great Again® is laughable.
Donald Trump with his gang of mindless sycophants and political retreads are advising those who criticize this despicable administration, a government that is a "complete and total catastrophe," to “Like it or leave it,” or “Go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done.”
Perhaps that’s not so unreasonable a request after all. Despite all their resources, Americans can’t seem to do it on their own. The President himself insists that America is "a stupid country...a dumb country."
